Inception
Swami Vivekananda, the foremost disciple of Sri Ramakrishna and a prophet of the modern age, took special interest throughout his life in propagating the universal truths contained in the Vedas and the Upanishads. He held Sanskrit, the language of the Vedas, in high regard. He declared, “The very sound of Sanskrit words gives a prestige and a power and a strength to the race.” He had prophesied on 4th July 1902, the day he entered Mahasamadhi, that a Veda Vidyalaya for the study of Vedas and Sanskrit would come up in course of time on the Belur Math premises. Such a college, he believed, would remove spiritual ignorance and kill superstitions. His solemn prophecy came true on 16 August 1993, after 90 years, when Ramakrishna Math Vivekananda Veda Vidyalaya was formally inaugurated by Swami Bhuteshanandaji Maharaj, the 13th President of the Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission.
